About Sara

Sara Kaye is a dedicated public servant and activist who has devoted her life to progressive causes and the betterment of the community she loves. In 2019, she was elected to represent City Council District 5. Since taking office in January of 2020, Sara has established a reputation as a leader in the fight against climate change and a stalwart advocate for addressing quality of life concerns, such as traffic, flooding, and safety issues.

Sara has built a strong record of delivering results for our community. In 2021, Sara sponsored a Climate Emergency Declaration, outlining a course of action to build a climate-resilient city and protect our families and homes. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the City Council, making New Rochelle the first city in Westchester to declare a climate emergency.

She has prioritized investment in our neighborhoods. During her first term on the Council, the City completed several multi-million-dollar projects in District 5, including the renovation of Pinebrook Tennis Center, restoration of Beechmont Lake, and upgraded athletic fields at City Park. The City Council also doubled the budget for street repaving and increased staffing to improve traffic calming.
After a tragic accident when a large tree fell on Halloween in 2019, Sara successfully advocated for the City to begin a proactive maintenance program for city street trees to help prevent injuries, property damage, and power outages caused by fallen trees.
Sara is a champion for working families and has partnered with HOPE Community Services. She secured essential funding to renovate and reopen the community room at Parkside Apartments and provide new youth enrichment programs helping students learn, grow and prepare for the future.
Sara has also worked to preserve and honor New Rochelle history by restoring the Thomas Paine Monument, landmarking the Thomas Paine Memorial Building, and spearheading an honorary street naming for the chief Nuremberg prosecutor who was a longtime New Rochelle resident.

As Council Liaison to the Ecology and Natural Resource Advisory Committee, Sara works in collaboration with community members and city administrators, to implement GreeNR, the City’s 20-year sustainability plan. Thanks to their efforts, New Rochelle recently attained Bronze certification under New York’s Climate Smart Communities program.
Sara was also selected to serve as Council Liaison to the Opportunity Youth Part (OYP), a new specialized program within the New Rochelle City Court, aimed at providing intensive, individualized support to participants, including job training, mental health counseling and mentoring. In 2021, Sara helped secure $70k to fund OYP’s expanding case management needs and assist at-risk emerging adults with getting their lives back on track, while also enhancing public safety. In 2022, Sara was honored with OYP’s “Most Valuable Community Partner” award.
Sara serves on the Board of Directors of Sustainable Westchester. She is also an Ex Officio Board Member of the Ward Acres Conservancy, a public-private partnership devoted to preserving the native habitat of a 62-acre park, and a member of the Green Schools Committee for the City School District of New Rochelle
Sara is a graduate of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and lives in the Larchmont Woods neighborhood with her husband and son.
